Adani Energy Solutions has commissioned the Karur Transmission (KTL) project. The project involves the installation of the 400/230 kV, 1000 MVA Karur pooling station and an associated 8.51 circuit kilometer (CKM) transmission line in Tamil Nadu.
With a transformation capacity of 1,000 MVA, this project will facilitate the evacuation of energy from renewable sources in the Karur/Tiruppur wind zone. In addition, it will strengthen the southern regional grid and support the integration of large-scale renewable energy sources.
The Karur/Tiruppur wind energy zone is a major wind corridor in Tamil Nadu, with significant wind energy capacities and several wind farms under construction. AESL was awarded this project to ensure the smooth evacuation of up to 2,500 MW of green energy produced in the region. This project is in line with India's decarbonization goals and supports the country's goal of achieving 500 GW of green energy by 2030. It will provide industrial, commercial and residential consumers with greater access to clean and reliable energy.
AESL was awarded this project in December 2021 through the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route for a period of 35 years, covering the basics of construction, ownership, operation and maintenance.
Several innovative approaches were applied during the implementation, including the use of high-boom RMC machines for concrete work, aerial platforms and cranes for tower construction, and the implementation of advanced cybersecurity solutions through the latest SCADA system. The project also involved multiple shift work around the clock, which allowed for further progress. AESL's execution capabilities were reflected in the construction of two 48 MT towers in less than 24 hours each, significantly exceeding the usual pace of 5-6 MT/day.
AESL also completed critical tasks like closure of 400 kV D/C Pugalur-Pugalur (HVDC) line and construction of tower structures under the constraints of the existing transmission line. The construction phase faced challenges related to the foundation, which were overcome with coconut trees and respecting all safety measures.
