Studio Shed, an architectural creation of LMNL Office, adorns the garden of a house in Brabant, characterized by its earth tones tiles. This garden studio, commissioned by the homeowners of a building that LMNL Office also has in mind, has realized a deliberately uncomplicated design through the use of prefabricated wooden panels.
Erica Chladová and Robert van der Pol, the studio's founders, commented: "The contemporary aesthetic recalls the design elements from the primary home. Every design decision is carefully considered for function, simplicity and adaptability," they conveyed to Dezeen.
This rectangular and compact structure of 7.5 by 13 meters serves to anchor the existing garden and at the same time provide protection from southwest winds. Lush perennial beds line the space between the barn and the house, hiding it from the streetscape.
The barn itself has been carefully crafted using a timber frame and prefabricated wood panels filled with natural wood fibre insulation, allowing the building to breathe. This choice of material pays homage to the area's "typical wooden barns" decorated with horizontal wood siding, the studio said.
The earthy clay tiles adorn both the roof and walls of Studio Shed, reflecting the bricks used in the primary home. The studio elaborated: "[We opted for] a soft earthen color to complement the IJsselsteen and gray accents to harmonize with the pavement of the garden."
Accoya wood, pre-stained to ensure uniform aging, lines the gables of the barn, a material also found on the porches that surround the main house.
Internally, the ground floor of Studio Shed includes a kitchen and a bathroom adjacent to a carport hidden by garage doors. A staircase in a double-height loft rises to a bedroom and studio space on the first floor.
