The second state-run Coal India (CIL) company, South Eastern Coalfields (SECL), has reached the milestone of producing more than 150 million tons (mt) of coal in the current fiscal year (FY).
Mahanadi Coalfields (MCL), located in Sambalpur, was the first CIL unit to join the club this FY.
SECL crossed the threshold, a company representative said last week. Since its inception, the Chhattisgarh-based CIL organization had reached the 150-meter mark four times. Before MCL recorded 168.2 tons of coal production to take the top spot in 2021-2022, SECL was CIL's highest-yielding coal. Last year, SECL was able to generate 148 tons of coal.
The amount of coal that secl produces has decreased over the past three years. In February 2022, Prem Sagar Mishra was appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director of SECL. The company then revised its business plan and put more emphasis on output.
About 130 mt of the 150 mt of coal produced in FY23, or about 10 mt more than in the same period last year, had been sent to power plants, according to a SECL representative.
Although SECL's production and performance are starting to rise, the company will have to work very hard to maintain the position it held until two years ago.
