A new housing initiative named Prime Minister Narendra Modi was introduced by Eknath Shinde, chief minister, Maharashtra and Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy prime minister's government. Fadnavis introduced the program "Modi Awas Gharkul Yojana" in his first budget speech.
Over the next three years, 10 lakh houses for the other remaining communities would be built as part of this program. With the Lok Sabha and next year's parliamentary elections in mind, Modi himself is an OBC, and it is clear that the initiative is intended to appeal to the OBC voting bank in the state.
Over the next three years, an expenditure of Rs 120 billion will be made available. Three lakh of these homes will be completed in 2023-2024 at a cost of Rs 36 billion.
Fadnavis announced a programme for the construction of 10 lakh homes in rural regions, strengthening the government's commitment to the prime minister's housing for all project in 2022.
This year, four lakh houses will be built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Of these, 1.5 lakh households would belong to other categories, accounting for 60% of the total housing stock, or 2.5 lakh homes.
