The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has received proposals from Larsen and Toubro and J Kumar Infra Projects for the construction of a new bridge between Nariman Point and Cuffe Parade. The bridge is a 1.6-kilometer, four-lane maritime link project that aims to connect Nariman Point and Colaba in southern Mumbai, reducing the driving distance between the two points to just five minutes.
The MMRDA had issued tenders for the civil construction of the project in November 2022, with a budget of Rs 315 crore on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis. This will be Mumbai's third sea link at the southern tip of the city, following the Bandra-Worli and Sewri-Nhava Sheva bridges. The technical review of the project is expected to take several months, after which the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to announce the lowest bidder, which will most likely be the contractor. The MMRDA intends to complete the civil work within two years of the contractor's appointment.
The project faces a number of obstacles, such as security clearances, as the link will pass through a high-security zone through naval and coast guard areas, and environmental permits, as some reclamation may be required.
