Jindal Stainless, the country's largest stainless steel manufacturer, has taken several steps to reduce its CO2 emissions by 1.4 lakh tonnes (LT) in the previous fiscal year, said general manager Abhyuday Jindal.
The company hopes to be climate neutral by 2050.
To achieve the goal, JSL established the role of Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) and recruited Kalyan Kumar Bhattacherjee for the important position, according to a business statement from Jindal.
“We reduced 1.4 LT of CO2 in FY22 through a variety of initiatives. From investing in renewable energy, producing green hydrogen to introducing electric cars in our factories, we are continuously building an ecosystem that supports our goals in environment, social and governance (ESGs)." he said.
According to JSL, Bhattacherjee will be responsible for boosting environmental activities, reducing carbon emissions for the company's current and future capacity growth plans, aiming to reach the net zero target by 2050.
According to Bhattacherjee, JSL is the first stainless steel manufacturer in India to establish a green hydrogen plant to produce stainless steel.
“We are constantly investing in low-carbon technologies, recycling processes, digitization and process upgrades for energy efficiency projects,” he said.
JSL recently signed an agreement with RenNew Power to build its own utility-scale renewable power plant in Jajpur as part of its carbon reduction strategy. Using a combination of solar and wind generation technologies, this project will generate 700 million units of renewable energy per year.
Jindal Stainless has also partnered with Hygenco India to build a green hydrogen plant in Hisar, which will dramatically reduce CO2 emissions.
