The cumulative weekly Covid-19 positivity rate in Kolkata has reached 60.29 percent, the second highest in the country, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said Wednesday.
The same percentage for the week ending Jan. 11 for the Howrah district of West Bengal is also very high - 50.89 percent, according to MoHFW data.
Kolkata accounted for 7,060 cases on Wednesday, 495 more than what was reported the previous day, the state health department said in a bulletin.
In contrast, Howrah district reported 1,361 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday. Tuesday was the number 1815.
West Bengal registered 22,155 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, 1,057 more than the previous day's count, bringing the total to 18,17,585, the health department bulletin said.
In the past 24 hours, 23 deaths have been reported from the coronavirus, bringing the death toll to 19,959.
The Parganas district in the north 24 recorded eight such deaths, while Kolkata reported seven. Two people were killed in Howrah and Uttar Dinajpur each. One death each was reported from Paschim Bardhaman, Purba Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas and Darjeeling districts, the bulletin said.
As of Tuesday, 8,117 patients have recovered from the disease, while the discharge rate is now 92.51 percent. So far, 16,81,375 people have been cured of the disease in West Bengal.
The number of active cases is 1,16,251.
At least 71,792 samples have been tested in West Bengal in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of such clinical trials to 2,20,62,882.
Meanwhile, Bangladeshi superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee and actress Swastika Mukherjee tested positive for the infection after which they are in home isolation, health department sources confirmed.
At least 4,78,026 Covid vaccine doses were administered in the state on Wednesday, a health department official said.
"In addition, a total of 86,118 doses of the vaccine were administered to the 15-18 age group, while 38,215 booster doses were given during the day to those who qualified," he said.
